The Kilwinning community and Scottish football are mourning the loss of Jim Fleeting, 70, who passed away on 15 March 2026. Celebrated for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication, Jim left an enduring mark on both the sport and the people he cherished. Jim’s career in football spanned decades, beginning as a player and manager with clubs including Norwich City, Ayr United, Clyde, Greenock Morton, Stirling Albion, and Kilmarnock.
He later served as the Scottish FA’s Director of Football Development, shaping generations of coaches with his knowledge, humility, and commitment to learning. His influence extended beyond Scotland, impacting football professionals across Europe. Locally, Jim’s passion for community sport transformed Kilwinning. In 1999, he supported Jim Hodge and Jim McCubbin in advocating for improved football facilities, helping establish the steering group that led to the creation of the Kilwinning Community Sports Club.
His dedication to youth and volunteers turned Pennyburn Playing Fields into a thriving hub for football, health, and opportunity—a legacy that will remain central to the community for years. Jim was also a devoted family man, survived by his wife, Irene; children Gemma, Barry, and Julie; and nine grandchildren, many of whom continue to participate and contribute at the Kilwinning Community Sports Club. Witnessing their growth and involvement in football brought him immense pride.
His legacy lives on in every player at Pennyburn, every coach he guided, and every volunteer inspired by his generosity. Jim Fleeting will be remembered with love, respect, and gratitude, and his influence on football and community will endure for generations.
