The Syracuse University and broader athletic community is mourning the tragic loss of Rex Owen Culpepper, who reportedly passed away at the age of 28 following a dirt bike accident. Rex, the eldest son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Brad Culpepper and his wife Monica, was remembered as a talented athlete, dedicated professional, and inspiring survivor.
A standout quarterback at Tampa’s Plant High School, Rex continued his football career at Syracuse University, playing both quarterback and later tight end. In 2018, while still at Syracuse, he faced a major health challenge when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Undergoing surgery and nearly 100 hours of chemotherapy at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, he emerged victorious, returning to the field that same year. His courage and determination earned him Syracuse University’s Jim DaRin Award for Courage, and he became an inspirational figure for teammates, fans, and the wider community.
Following his athletic career, Rex pursued a legal path, following in the footsteps of his family. He earned his law degree and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2024, building a reputation as a committed and compassionate attorney. Beyond his professional achievements, he was cherished for his optimism, resilience, and dedication to helping others.
Tributes across social media and from friends and family have remembered Rex as a remarkable young man—a devoted son, cancer survivor, Division I athlete, and emerging lawyer whose positive spirit touched everyone he met. He had recently become engaged, a testament to the bright future he was building. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, and his legacy of courage and determination will continue to inspire.
